Bournemouth University is a university in and around the large south coast town of Bournemouth, UK (although its main campus is actually situated in neighbouring Poole). It has several well respected (John Kimble, 1999) departments including The School of Conservation Sciences (which focuses upon Archaeology, Anthropology, Geography and Foresnsic Sciences), The School of Health and Social Care, The School of Services Management, The Business School, School of Design, Engineering & Computing and the Media School, recognised as the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice.

BU has been named on the 10th Sept 2009 as a finalist for two of the most coveted prizes in UK higher education the 2009 Times Higher Education (THE) Awards for ‘University of the Year’ and ‘Research Project of the Year’ for the archaeological examination of early human footprints conducted by professor Matthew Bennett in the School of Conservation Sciences. The awards, considered the ‘Oscars’ of UK higher education, will be announced during a gala evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Thursday, 15 October. The winners were Teesside University and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, University of Lancaster, respectively.

Traditionally known for its focus on professional courses, Bournemouth University in the 2000s is investing in research to underpin its curriculum and maximise the University's contribution to the regional and national economies; the University already has a variety of specialist research groups including The Market Research Group. The Library at Bournemouth University has won two national awards: in 2007 the Library Design Award of the Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) for a large university. SCONUL was founded in 1950 as the Standing Conference of National and University Libraries. In 1994 when British polytechnics became universities it merged with COPOL, the Council of Polytechnic Librarians, and in 2001 it extended its membership to libraries of Colleges of Higher Education and changed to its current name.SCONUL's activities include advocacy for the higher education library community, training and sharing best practice, making arrangements for reciprocal access to libraries, and the collection of statistics.

Its members include libraries in higher education institutions (not only universities but also higher education colleges and specialist schools and conservatoires); the British Library and the National Libraries of Ireland, Scotland and Wales; and libraries in national museums and other specialist institutions.[5]

SCONUL is governed by its members whose Representatives meet twice a year, and between meetings by an elected Executive Board. SCONUL is a registered charity.

In 2009 the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for "Outstanding Library Team".

The university's heraldic motto is Discere Mutari Est (To Learn is to Change).

Bournemouth University has two campuses: Talbot Campus and Lansdowne Campus.

Lansdowne Campus is just outside Bournemouth's town centre, housing six teaching and administrative buildings, the students' union nightclub and various halls of residence located around Christchurch Road, Oxford Road and Holdenhurst Road. Unlike Talbot, Lansdowne is not a self-contained campus.
